Southern California End of Summer DUI Crackdown

|

It’s not time to put the barbeque and ice chest in the garage just yet. But you can be sure that before Southern Californians do, they’ll be celebrating the end of summer with some ice cold, possibly blended, drinks. From August 16th through Labor Day on September 2nd, otherwise known as the traditional end of summer period, Southern California law enforcement agencies will be out in full force looking to nab drunk drivers.

The California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, provided funds for law enforcement agencies throughout California to conduct DUI and driver’s license checkpoints and engage in saturation patrols. Specially trained officers will also be available to detect drivers under the influence of alcohol of other drugs.

During the Labor Day weekend in 2011, DUI related accidents took the lives of 138 people nationwide.

“Labor Day weekend is traditionally a time to socialize with family and friends,” said Cypress Police Chief Jackie Gomez-Whiteley. “We need to watch out for each other and not let friends or family members drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Our officers will be out in full force over the holidays, ensuring the safety of our community with a zero tolerance towards drivers with a blood alcohol content of over .08.”

Law enforcement officials throughout California who are participating the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign are encouraging Californians to plan ahead of the end of summer festivities. Find a designated driver, other alternative means home, or don’t drink because law enforcement will be on the lookout for drunk drivers.
