Officer Loses Eye During Dui Arrest

|

While I’m often critical of officers and their handling of DUI arrests, I do recognize that there is a certain degree of risk in jobs of law enforcement. One recent DUI arrest proved to be one that demonstrates the dangers, albeit an unlikely one, that officers face.

According to Arizona’s Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Sergeant Mark Bustamante conducted what seemed to be a run-of-the-mill DUI stop this past Saturday, December 10th.

The suspect, 28-year-old Yesenia Gonzalez, was in the process of being arrested when she became combative with Sergeant Bustamante. According to authorities, she kicked Bustamante in the face with her the heel of her boot seriously injuring his eye.

Bustamante was taken to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save his eye.

Gonzalez was also accused of kicking another deputy, however the extent of those injuries were not released by the sheriff’s department.

In addition to driving under the influence, Gonzalez is also being charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Needless to say, if you are ever arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, follow the instructions I’ve said in previous posts and never resist.
