Bar Provides Wall-Mounted Breathalyzer to Patrons

|

Unless you own a personal breathalyzer, determining your blood alcohol content before you leave a bar is nothing more that speculation based on what you drank, how much you drank, and how fast you drank it. Hopping in your car after using such a dubious method is a good way to get caught driving over the legal limit, or worse, cause an accident.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way to determine what your blood alcohol content level was before leaving the bar…without having to use the guessing method?

Appropriately named, McSober’s Saloon in Coldwater, Ohio, provides its patrons with a way to help determine if they are under the legal limit before the get behind the wheel.

Patrons of McSober’s Saloon are provided with a wall-mounted, Alco-Checkpoint unit. For $1.00 customers can blow into the unit, just like they would a breathalyzer, to determine what their blood alcohol content is before they get behind the wheel.

“It’s about knowing where you’re at,” bar owner Mike Moorman said of the Alco-Checkpoint unit. “If you’re too drunk, you better knock it off before you do something stupid.”

Just as law enforcement needs to calibrate its breathalyzers, the manufacturers of the Alco-Checkpoint calibrate the unit at McSober’s Saloon every three months.

And like law enforcement breathalyzers, the Alco-Checkpoint too has its flaws and should not be relied upon as a surefire way to determine if a person is safe to drive. Remember that a person can still be charged with a DUI if they are under the legal limit of 0.08 percent, yet unable to operate a vehicle as a sober person would under similar circumstances.

While it is ill-advised to exclusively rely on the Alco-Checkpoint to prevent a DUI, I’m in favor of any measure which might help prevent a DUI and keep drunk drivers off of the street.
