I think a great answer to people who ask the inane question of “How can you defend xyz defendant?” is to ask them if they know what a Writ of Assistance Is?

A Writ of Assistance was used by the British soldiers to break into a home to do all sorts of dastardly things to the occupants of the home before the Revolutionary War. King George gave this law called “Writs of Assistance” to the constabulary in the colonies to enforce the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act said in most simple terms that the colonists had to have a “stamp” of King George on every document in their home. Of course, the occupants of the home had to pay for the stamps.

However, this “law” was very hard to enforce because no British Agent could gain access to the homes with a “warrant’. Hence, the Writs of Assistance. Murders, child abuse, and many rapes resulted from the open policy of the British soldiers to enter the homes of the colonists without warrant.

If we don’t defend the rights of the weakest in our society, then the King Georges of this world will do what ever they want. You better believe it.
